Surface dressing is a bitumen binder sprayed onto an existing surface with chippings spread and rolled into it. It is not a structural repair and it does not level anything out. What it does is seal the surface against water, restore grip, and add years to a road or yard that has worn smooth but is still sound underneath.

That distinction is the whole decision. If your surface is worn, faded and starting to let water in, dressing is much the cheaper answer. If it is rutted, cracking in a pattern or moving under traffic, the base has gone and dressing it will only hide that for a season. We will tell you which one you have.

We work on farm and estate roads, private lanes, yards, car parks and playgrounds. Potholes and broken areas get cut out and repaired first, because dressing over a pothole achieves nothing. After dressing there is always some loose chipping for the first week or two while the surface takes traffic, and it wants sweeping up once it has knitted in.

Why we quote per job

There is no useful price per square metre for this, because these change the number more than the material does:

Area or length, since dressing gets considerably cheaper per square metre at scale
How much patching is needed before the dressing can go down
Chipping size and type, which is set by the traffic the surface carries
Access, and whether traffic has to be managed while we work
Weather, because dressing needs dry, warm conditions to take properly

If the base has gone rather than the surface, dressing will only hide it for a season. We will tell you which one you have before you spend anything.

Surface Dressing questions

Is surface dressing the same as resurfacing?

No. Resurfacing lays a new layer of tarmac and can correct levels and ruts. Dressing is a thin seal and chipping over what is already there. Dressing costs much less and is the right answer only where the base is still sound.

How long does surface dressing last?

On a private road or yard with light to moderate traffic, several years, and longer where traffic is light. It depends more on the traffic and on how sound the base was than on the dressing itself.

Why is there loose chipping afterwards?

That is normal for the first week or two. Traffic rolls the chippings into the binder, and whatever does not bed in comes loose. We come back and sweep it up once the surface has taken.
