A patio has to do three things: sit level and stable, shed water away from the house, and stay clean enough to use. Most of the failed patios we lift did none of them, because they were laid on five dabs of mortar instead of a full bed.

We lay every slab on a full mortar bed over a compacted base. Full bedding matters more than anything else on a patio, because a slab supported only at its corners rocks, cracks across the middle, and lets water sit underneath it. It is the single most common reason a patio fails early.

We also set the falls properly. A patio wants a gentle fall away from the house, and it must sit at least 150mm below the damp proof course, or you have built a route for water into the brickwork. If your levels do not allow that, we will tell you at the quote stage and design in a drainage channel rather than quietly bridging the damp course.

What affects the price

Why we quote per job

There is no useful price per square metre for this, because these change the number more than the material does:

Area, and how many cuts the shape needs
The paving itself, since porcelain, natural stone and concrete are very different prices
Whether the ground has to be dug out and carted away or built up
Access, because slabs and muck barrowed a long way take longer
Steps, walls or drainage channels that form part of the same job

We check your levels against the damp course at the quote stage. Where they are tight, a drainage channel goes into the price rather than appearing as an extra later.

How close to the house can a patio be?

It has to finish at least 150mm below the damp proof course, which is usually two brick courses. Where the existing levels make that awkward we design in a drainage channel against the wall rather than bridging the damp course.

Why do slabs come loose?

Nearly always spot bedding, where the slab is laid on five dabs of mortar. It is quicker to lay, and it rocks, cracks and lets water sit underneath. We lay every slab on a full bed.

Which paving is easiest to look after?

Porcelain. It absorbs almost nothing, so it does not stain readily and it goes green far more slowly than natural stone or concrete. It costs more to buy and takes longer to cut.
