A new driveway is the whole job, not a new surface over old ground. That distinction matters, because a surface laid straight onto a failed base will fail again in the same places.
We dig out to the depth the finish needs, allowing for both the sub-base and the surface itself, and cart the spoil away. The stone base goes down and is compacted in layers rather than in one lift, because a single deep layer never compacts properly through its full depth. Edgings are bedded and haunched in concrete. Falls are set so water runs where you want it, away from the house.
If you are converting a front garden into parking, we will also look at the kerb. Dropping a kerb is a highways matter that needs the council to approve it, so we tell you at the quote stage whether your frontage needs one and what that involves.

What affects the price
Why we quote per job
There is no useful price per square metre for this, because these change the number more than the material does:
- Area, shape, and how much cutting the pattern needs around the edges
- Depth of excavation, which is deeper for a drive that will carry a van than a car
- Whether a grab lorry can reach the spoil or it has to be barrowed out
- The finish, and for block paving whether it is a standard or a premium range
- Any dropped kerb, drainage connection or retaining work the frontage needs
A dropped kerb is quoted separately, because the application goes to the county highways team and the work has to be carried out by an approved contractor.
