Most gardens we are asked to look at have the same problem. There is a patio, there is a lawn, and there is nothing joining them, so the garden is really two spaces that do not talk to each other. The parts that would connect them, the levels, the paths, the boundaries and the drainage, are the hard landscaping.

We take on the structural side of a garden: reshaping levels, laying paving and decking, putting in fencing, installing artificial grass, and sorting the drainage that makes all of it work. Where a garden slopes we terrace it, which nearly always gets you more usable space than a single slope ever gives you.

Doing it as one scheme is worth more than it sounds. The drainage has to be in before the surfaces go down, the levels have to be set before the fencing goes up, and the fall on a patio has to have somewhere to go. When those get done by different people at different times, the joins are where the problems appear.

What affects the price

Why we quote per job

There is no useful price per square metre for this, because these change the number more than the material does:

The size of the garden and how much of it is being changed
How much the levels move, since excavation and cart away is a large part of any scheme
Access, because a garden reachable only through the house is a much slower job
The mix of surfaces and materials specified
Drainage, which is invisible in the finished garden and can be a real share of the cost

We are happy to phase a larger garden. The rule is that groundworks and drainage go in first, even for areas you are not finishing yet, or they mean lifting a finished surface later.

Landscaping questions

Do you design gardens as well as build them?

We work from what you want and from what the site will allow, and we are happy to plan a scheme with you on site. Full planting design is not what we do, so if you want a designed planting scheme we would work alongside a garden designer.

Can you do the work in phases?

Yes, and it is often sensible on a larger garden. The rule is that groundworks and drainage go in first, even for areas you are not finishing yet, because retro-fitting drainage under a finished surface means lifting it.

How long does a garden take?

A single element such as a fence or a patio is days. A full garden scheme with level changes runs to several weeks. We will give you a programme with the quotation so you know what to expect.
