A driveway has to carry the weight of a car every day, drain properly through a Nottinghamshire winter, and still look right against the front of the house. Most of the driveways we are called out to replace failed for the same reason: the sub-base underneath was too thin, so the surface sank, rutted or cracked within a few years.

We start with what goes under the surface. The ground is dug out to the depth the finish needs, a compacted stone sub-base goes down in layers, and edges are haunched in concrete so the surface has something solid to press against. Only then does the finish go on.

You choose that finish. Block paving gives you colour and pattern, and it can be lifted and relaid in one spot if a service ever needs digging up. Resin bound gives a smooth surface with no joints, and water passes straight through it. Tarmac covers a large area quickly and costs less per square metre. Gravel is the least expensive and suits a period or rural frontage. We will tell you which of those suits your access, your drainage and your budget.

Why we quote per job

There is no useful price per square metre for this, because these change the number more than the material does:

The area in square metres, and how square or awkward the shape is
Whether the existing surface has to come up, and how much spoil goes away
Access for a digger and a grab lorry, since hand-digging a rear drive costs more
The finish you choose, with gravel at the lower end and resin bound at the higher
Whether drainage has to be added to meet the surface water rules

We measure up and put a fixed figure in writing. If something genuinely unforeseen turns up once the ground is open, we stop and talk to you before doing anything about it.

Edge restraints are bedded and haunched in concrete, and any drainage channel is set to fall before the surface goes on.

The finish is laid, jointed or compacted as that material needs, and the site is cleared.

Driveways questions

Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?

Usually not, provided the surface is permeable or the water drains to a soakaway or a border rather than out onto the pavement. Resin bound and gravel are permeable by nature. For a surface that is not permeable we design the drainage in, so the job stays within permitted development.

How long does a driveway take?

A typical domestic driveway takes three to five working days on site. Resin bound adds a day, because the base has to be dry before the resin goes down.

Can I park on it straight away?

Block paving and gravel take a car the day we finish. Tarmac wants a day to cool and harden. Resin bound needs the cure time we will give you on the day, usually overnight in warm weather.
