Most driveway faults are local. A dip where a wheel always turns, a sunken strip over an old service trench, an edge that has crumbled because nothing was holding it. Replacing the whole surface for one of those is money you do not need to spend.

With block paving we lift the affected blocks, deal with the base underneath, and relay the same blocks. Because your own blocks go back in, the repair does not read as a patch the way a tarmac repair does. On tarmac we cut out square to sound material rather than filling the hole, then lay and roll a proper patch, because a shovelled-in repair breaks up again within a season.

The important part is finding the cause. A dip over a trench means the trench was backfilled loose. A crumbling edge means there was no restraint. A soft area that keeps returning usually means water is getting in. We will tell you what caused it, because otherwise the repair is temporary.

There is no useful price per square metre for this, because these change the number more than the material does:

Size of the affected area, and whether it is one patch or several
Whether the base has to be dug out and rebuilt or simply topped up
Whether we can reuse your existing blocks or have to source a match
Access, since a small rear repair can take as long to reach as it does to carry out
Whether the underlying cause needs fixing too, such as adding drainage or an edge restraint

If the failures are spread widely enough that the base has gone, we will say so. Patching a failing base year after year costs more than replacing it once.

Will the repair be visible?

On block paving, usually not, because we relay your own blocks. On tarmac a patch always shows to some extent, because new tarmac is blacker than weathered tarmac. It evens out over a couple of years.

My drive sinks in the same spot every time. Why?

Almost always water, or a loose backfill under that spot, often over an old service trench. Repairing the surface alone will not hold it. We would deal with the cause first and tell you what that involves.

Is it worth repairing, or should I replace it?

If the failures are local and the rest is sound, repair. If the surface is failing in several places at once, that is the base talking and you are better replacing it. We will give you an honest view rather than quoting the bigger job by default.
