The first conversation about a new patio is usually about size and position, not paving. A patio that only catches the sun at nine in the morning does not get used, and a patio too narrow to pull a chair back from the table does not either. We would rather talk that through on site before anyone picks a slab.
On material, the honest summary is this. Porcelain is dimensionally consistent, absorbs almost nothing, and stays clean the longest, but it costs more and takes longer to cut. Natural stone (sandstone, limestone, granite) has variation and character, and each slab is slightly different in thickness, so it takes longer to lay well. Concrete paving is the most affordable and has come a long way in appearance.
Whatever you choose, the construction is the same: a compacted base, full mortar beds, falls away from the house, and jointing suited to the paving. Porcelain needs a slurry primer on the back of every slab, which is a step that gets skipped and is why some porcelain patios lift.

There is no useful price per square metre for this, because these change the number more than the material does:
- Area and the number of cuts the shape demands
- The paving range, which is the widest single variable on a patio
- Whether the ground needs digging out or building up to reach your level
- Access for barrowing materials in and spoil out
- Any steps, edging or walling forming part of the same job
Size is worth settling before material. A patio a metre short on each side is the thing people regret, and the extra area usually costs less than changing the paving.
