When a fence comes down in a gale, look at the posts. They will nearly always have snapped at ground level, because that is where a timber post rots first, or they will have levered out because they were not deep enough.

So that is where the work goes. Posts are set to a depth that suits the fence height, in concrete, with the concrete finished above ground level and sloped so water runs off rather than sitting around the post. Where you want a fence to last a long time we would suggest concrete posts with timber panels, because the post is then the part that cannot rot.

We fit closeboard, which is built up on site from featheredge boards and is the strongest option, standard panels, which are quicker and cheaper, and post-and-rail for paddocks and rural boundaries. Gravel boards go along the bottom on any timber fence, so the panel is not sitting in wet ground.

The length of the run and the height of the fence
Closeboard, panel or post-and-rail, which differ considerably
Timber or concrete posts
How much old fencing has to come out, and whether the old post concrete comes with it
Ground conditions and access, since a rocky or root-filled line slows the post holes right down

Concrete posts cost more than timber and outlast them by a long way, because they cannot rot at ground level. We will price both if you want to compare.

Fencing questions

How high can I put a fence up?

Generally two metres within a garden, and one metre where it fronts a highway, without needing permission. There are exceptions, particularly with listed buildings and some new estates with covenants, so it is worth checking your deeds if you are going higher.

Which side of the fence is mine?

There is no universal rule, whatever people say about the rails facing your neighbour. Your deeds or title plan are the only reliable answer, and we would ask you to check before we take an existing fence down.

Concrete or timber posts?

Concrete posts outlast timber by a long way, because they cannot rot at ground level, which is where timber posts fail. Timber looks better. If longevity is what you care about, concrete posts with timber panels is the sensible combination.
