Steps are the one part of a garden where getting it slightly wrong is a trip hazard. The rule that matters is consistency: every riser in a flight should be the same height. People find the rhythm of a flight after the first step and stop looking, so one riser 20mm out of line with the others is exactly what catches somebody.

We set out garden steps with a generous tread and a low riser, which suits a garden far better than the steeper dimensions you would use indoors. Every tread gets a slight fall so water runs off rather than sitting on it and freezing.

Paths get the same treatment as any other paving: a proper base, full mortar beds where slabs are used, and restrained edges. We will normally suggest matching the path and step material to the patio, because a garden with three different paving types in it reads busy rather than considered.

Whether the flight needs retaining walls at the sides
Path length, width and the number of curves
The paving and walling materials chosen
Access, and whether spoil from the excavation can be got out easily

A long flight may want a landing part way up, and a steep one may want a handrail. We will flag either at the quote stage rather than after the concrete is in.

What makes garden steps comfortable?

A low riser with a deep tread, and every riser in the flight the same height. Garden steps should feel shallower than indoor stairs. Where a flight is long, a landing part way up breaks it and gives somewhere to pause.

Do steps need a handrail?

Not usually in a private garden, though it is worth considering on a long or steep flight, or where somebody in the household is unsteady. We will flag it if we think your flight warrants one.

Can you match my existing paving?

Often, if the range is still available. If it is not, we will suggest either the closest current equivalent or a deliberate contrast, because a near miss usually looks worse than an intended difference.
