Why driveways fail

The part you never see is the part that matters

Nearly every driveway we are called out to replace failed for the same reason. The sub-base underneath was too thin, or it was tipped in and rolled once instead of being compacted in layers. The surface then sinks, ruts or cracks within a few years, and no amount of good block work on top can save it.

It is also the easiest place to save money on a quote, because nobody can see it once the job is finished. So our written quotes name the sub-base depth. If another quote does not, that is the question worth asking before you choose.

    We measure the area, check access and drainage, and talk through the finishes that suit the job. No charge for this.

    A fixed price in writing that names the materials and the sub-base depth, so you can compare it fairly against anyone else.

    We book you in and do the work

    You get a start date and a realistic idea of how long we will be on site. We clear up at the end of every day.

Do you charge for a quote?

No. We come out, measure up and give you a written price with no charge and no obligation. If we think the job you are asking for is not the right answer, we will say so then rather than after you have paid for it.

Which areas do you cover?

We are based in Worksop and work across Mansfield, Chesterfield, Newark on Trent, Nottingham, Lincoln, Derby and Grantham, plus the villages around them. If you are just outside that, ask, because it often still works.

How much does a new driveway cost?

It depends on the size, the finish and how much digging out is involved, so an honest answer needs a look at the site. Gravel is the least expensive finish and resin bound the most, with block paving and tarmac in between. The written quote is fixed, not an estimate that moves later.

How long will the work take?

A typical domestic driveway is three to five working days on site. A patio is usually less. A full garden scheme with level changes runs to several weeks. You get a programme with your quote so you know what to expect.

Do I need planning permission for a driveway?

Usually not, provided the surface is permeable or the water drains to a soakaway or a border rather than out onto the pavement. Resin bound and gravel are permeable by nature, and for other finishes we design the drainage in so the job stays within permitted development.

What makes a driveway last?

What is underneath it. Most failed driveways failed because the sub-base was too thin or was not compacted in layers. That is why our quotes name the sub-base depth, so you can see what you are paying for under the surface.
