Paving goes green because algae holds moisture on the surface, particularly on a north facing patio or under trees. It is slippery, it looks tired, and it is one of the main reasons people think they need a new patio when they do not.

We treat the growth first so it dies off, then clean with a rotary flat surface cleaner, which keeps the pressure even. On natural stone we are more careful, because too much pressure on a soft sandstone opens up the face and makes it hold dirt faster afterwards.

Cleaning usually takes out whatever is left of the pointing, so re-pointing is part of the job on most patios. If your joints are already failing we will say so before we start, because a clean on a patio with open joints just moves water into the bedding.

Area and how much of it is fiddly detail around planting and steps
How heavy the algae and moss growth is
How much of the pointing has failed and needs replacing
The paving type, since soft natural stone needs more care and takes longer
Whether you want sealing afterwards

Soft natural stone is worked more gently and takes longer, so a sandstone patio prices differently from the same area in concrete paving.

Will my patio go green again?

Eventually, yes, especially if it is shaded or under trees. Sealing slows it down and so does keeping leaf litter off over winter. A wash every year or two keeps on top of it.

Can you clean natural stone safely?

Yes, at a lower pressure than we would use on concrete. Sandstone in particular scars if it is blasted, and a scarred slab holds dirt worse afterwards, so we work more gently and accept it takes longer.

Do I need re-pointing as well?

Usually. Cleaning takes out anything that was already loose. Leaving open joints lets water into the bedding, which is what starts slabs lifting, so we would rather point it than leave it.
