Resin bound is natural aggregate mixed with a clear resin in a forced action mixer, then trowelled out onto a prepared base. Because every stone is coated and bonded to its neighbours, the surface holds together and stays put. It is not the same thing as resin bonded, where loose stone is scattered onto a resin layer and comes away underfoot.

The finish is smooth enough to push a pram or a wheelchair over, has no joints for weeds to find, and is porous, so rain drains through the surface instead of running off it. That porosity is why resin bound is usually the easiest finish to get past the surface water rules on a new driveway.

The base matters more here than with any other finish. Resin bound is a wearing course, not a structural one, so it needs a sound and, crucially, dry base underneath: either new permeable tarmac or a suitable existing surface. We will check what you have and tell you whether it can be overlaid or has to be replaced. We will not lay resin over a base we do not trust.

There is no useful price per square metre for this, because these change the number more than the material does:

Whether the existing base can be overlaid or a new base is needed, which is the single biggest factor
Area, and how many edges and curves have to be formed
The aggregate blend, since some natural stones cost noticeably more than others
Depth of the wearing course, which is greater where vehicles turn
Weather, because the base has to be dry, and a cold or wet spell can move the date

You pick the blend from samples. The colour reads differently wet and dry, so we will show you both.

Prepare and prime
The base is cleaned and made good, edges are formed, and the surface is primed where needed.

Mix and trowel
Resin and aggregate are mixed in measured batches and trowelled out to a consistent depth in one continuous pour.

Cure
The surface is left to cure. We tell you on the day when you can walk on it and when you can park on it.

Resin Bound Driveways questions

Is resin bound the same as resin bonded?

No, and the difference matters. Resin bound has every stone coated and locked into the mix, so the surface is smooth and stays intact. Resin bonded is loose stone scattered over resin, so it reads rougher and sheds stone. We lay resin bound.

Does resin bound crack?

The resin layer is flexible, so it does not crack on its own. What cracks is the base underneath moving. That is why we insist on a sound base and will not overlay one that is already failing.

What maintenance does it need?

Brush it and wash it down. There is no jointing sand to top up and no weeds coming through the surface. Keep leaf litter off it over winter so the pores stay open.
